what is adaptive behaviour
age appropriate everyday living skills that can be as basic as walking, talking, dressing, going to school etc they are developed as a result of experience and help us to adjust to our environment
what is maladaptive behaviour
develop as a means of reducing anxiety and originate from early childhood experiences, fam situations and environmental stressors. can be seen as a coping mechanism but often it is seen that this can interfere with ones day to day life.
what is normal
when it helps a persin to assimilate sppropriately into their society or culture
what is abnormal
when a persons behaviours is viewed out of the orginary and doesnt assimilate into society
approaches to normality include
situational cultural historical statistical functional medical
mental health
mental health is a state of emotional and social wellbeing in which an individual can actively contribute to society and realise their own abilities whilst feeling well.
mental disorder
exaggerated forms of normal thoughts, feelings, + behaviours implying the existence of a clinically recognisable set of symptoms and behaviours that usually need treatment to be alleviated.
what are some internal factors
personality, emotions, self esteem, physical health, genetic predisposition
external factors
family, school, friends, work, social, cultural, religion, education, employment, socioeconomic status, support network
what is a locus of control
whether a person perceives that they have control over theur behavious or if they are controlled by external factors
internal locus of control eg
if someone can take responsibility for their learning and their actions. such as performing well on a sac, or not performing well, acknowledge they will have to work harder
external locus of control
believes their behaviour is controlled by outside influences ie luck or blame
eustress
refers to positive psycolohical response to a percieved stressor
distress
negative psychological response to a percieved stressor
psychosis
means there is a loss of contact with reality eg schizophrenia
