Unit 2 - Lesson 1 Flashcards
Pathogen
An organism, virus or protein that causes disease
External Defenses
Internal Defenses
Skin, hair, nails, sweat and oil glands
Inflammation (swelling and redness) and fever
Immune System
Made up of tissues and specialized white blood cells that recognize and attack foreign substances in the body
Macrophage
A white blood cell that destroys pathogens by digesting them. They help start the body’s immune response to antigens
Antigen - a substance that stimulates a response by the immune system
T cell
An immune system cell that coordinates the immune system and attacks many infected cells
Helper T cells - recognize the antigen and activate the killer T cells and the B cells
Killer T cells - attack infected body cells by attaching to the antigen
B cells
Cells that Make antibodies that attach to specific antigens
Antibody
A specialized protein that binds to a specific antigen to tag it for destruction
Immunity
The ability to resist or recover from an infectious disease
Once the body has fought an infection, it produces Memory cells which remember a specific pathogen
Vaccine
A substance prepared from killed or weakened pathogens that is introduced into the body to produce immunity
They let the body make memory cells
External Defenses
Internal Defenses
Skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, oil glands
Fever, inflammation
