Unit 1 - Lesson 4 Flashcards
Digestive System
Breaks down the food you eat into nutrients
What are the 2 types of digestion?
Mechanical - breaking, crushing, and mashing food
Chemical - where large molecules of food are broken down into smaller molecules by enzymes
Enzyme
A chemical that the body uses to break down large molecules into smaller molecules
Parts of the digestive system
Mouth
Esophagus
Stomach
Small intestine
Large intestine
Esophagus
The long tube between the mouth and the stomach
Stomach
The muscular bag that crushes food and contains acids and enzymes for killing bacteria and breaking down proteins
The final step of mechanical digestion takes place here
Small intestine
The muscular tube where most chemical digestion takes place and most nutrients are absorbed
Large intestine
Water and nutrients are absorbed
Pancreas
Makes fluids that break down material found in food
Liver
Makes and releases a mixture called bile that is stored in the gall bladder
Bile breaks up large fat droplets into small fat droplets
Excretory System
Eliminates cellular waste through the lungs, skin, kidneys, and digestive system
What organs are in the urinary system?
Kidneys - remove waste from the blood
Ureters - tubes from the kidneys to the bladder
Bladder - sac that stores urine
Urethra - tube that allows urine to exit from the bladder
Nephrons
Microscopic structures in the kidney that filter blood
Urine
The liquid in which water and the wastes filtered from the blood leave the body
