Unit 1 - Lesson 3 Flashcards
Cardiovascular System
Transports blood around the body
Made of the heart, blood, and blood vessels. Is a closed circulatory system
Blood
The fluid that carries gases, nutrients, and waste through the body
Maintains homeostasis by transporting hormones, nutrients, and oxygen to cells and carrying waste away from cells
Lymphatic system
A group of organs that collects the fluid that leaks from blood and returns it to the blood
An open circulatory system
Made of:
Lymph nodes
Lymph vessels
Bone marrow
Tonsils
Thymus
Spleen
Lymph
The leaked fluid from the blood
Lymph Nodes
Small bean- shaped organs that remove pathogens and dead cells from lymph
Found in the armpits, neck and groin
Artery
A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart
Has a thick wall
Capillary
A tiny blood vessel that allows exchange of substances between body cells and blood
The walls are very thin ( only 1 cell layer)
Vein
A blood vessel that carries blood back to the heart
Thinner walls than arteries
Have valves
What is blood made of?
Plasma - fluid part of blood
Platelets - help the blood to clot
White blood cells - fights pathogens (bacteria and viruses)
Red blood cells - carry oxygen to the cells
Pulmonary Circulation
Systemic Circulation
The flow of blood between the heart and the lungs
The flow of blood between the heart and the rest of the body
Respiratory System
The group of organs that takes in oxygen and gets rid of carbon dioxide
Parts of the respiratory system:
Nose
Pharynx - throat
Larynx - part of the throat that has the vocal cords
Trachea - windpipe
Bronchi - 2 branches coming from the trachea going to each lung
Alveoli - air sacs in the lungs. Gases move across the alveoli and blood vessels
