Unit 1 - Lesson 2 Flashcards
Skeletal System
The organ system that supports and protects the body and allows it to move
It also stores minerals and produces red blood cells
A. Protection
B. Storage
C. Blood cell production
D. Movement
Ligament
Tough, flexible strands of connective tissue that holds bones together
Found at the ends of bones
Cartilage
A strong, flexible and smooth connective tissue found at the end of bones
It allows bones to move smoothly across each other
What are bones made of?
Minerals - calcium
Connective tissue - made of a protein called collagen
Marrow - a soft tissue found in the center of bones
What are the 2 types of bone tissue?
Compact bone - dense and makes bone rigid and hard
Spongy bone - has many open spaces and provides most of the strength and support for a bone
Joint
The place where 2 or more bones connect
Can be fixed or movable
Types of movable joints
Ball and socket joint
Gliding joint
Hinge joint
Muscular system
Made of the muscles that allow your body to move and be flexible
3 types of muscle:
Smooth muscle - found in internal organs and blood vessels
Cardiac muscle - found in the heart
Skeletal muscle - attached to bones
Tendon
The tough strand of tissue that connects a muscle to a bone
How does skeletal muscle work?
In pairs:
Flexor - bends a joint
Extensor - straightens a joint
