Continent
The Earth is divided into 7 major landmasses known as continents
Hemisphere
Halves of the Earth’s surface divided by the Equator
Latitude
Imaginary lines that run horizontally around the Earth about 110km apart
Longitude
Imaginary lines that run vertically around the Earth
Degrees
Latitude and longitude is measured in mathematical degrees
Equator
The Equator divides the Earth into the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, it sits at 0 degrees latitude
Prime Meridian
The meridian line at 0 degrees longitude from which the east and west longitude is calculated
Tropic of Cancer
A line of latitude located 23.5 degrees north of the equator, marking the most Northern points of the tropics
Tropic of Capricorn
A line of latitude located at 23.5 degrees south of the equator, marking the most southern points of the tropics
Poles
These are the points on which the Earth turns, known as the North Pole (90 degrees north) and the South Pole (located at 90 degrees south)
Phenomena
Remarkable things e.g. Natural phenomena a volcano
Topography
The arrangement of the physical features in a landscape, such as mountains, rivers, beaches, roads, conurbations
Altitude
The height above sea level

Horticulturalist
A person who studies growing plants, flowers, fruits or vegetables
Volcanoes
An opening on the Earth’s surface that allows magma to escape sometimes in violent eruptions e.g. Mount Etna, Italy
Geysers
A vent in the Earth’s surface that periodically ejects a column of hot water e.g Old faithful in Yellowstone National Park, USA
Auroras
Light displays in the sky seen around the magnetic poles of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Aurora Borealis/ Northern Lights in the Northern Hemisphere; Aurora Australis/ Southern Lights in the Southern Hemisphere
Hurricane
A storm characterised by very strong winds particularly in the Caribbean
Precipitation
Water falling from the clouds in the form of rain, hail, sleet or snow
Monsoon
The rainy season in South and South East Asia
Heritage Site
A site that has cultural or historical significance
Infrastructure
The physical structures and facilities that a country or city requires in order to function
Serviced accommodation
Accommodation where services such as reception, cleaning and food options are provided
Village home-stays
A scheme that allows tourists to live with a local family while on holiday
Tourist Area life cycle
The series of changes in the life of a tourist destination
Finite resources
Resources that are limited in their size or lifespan
Sustainable
Something that can be maintained at a certain rate
Mature destination
Has reached the stage where it attracts the maximum number of tourists and the peak of its development
Rejuvenated
Brought back to life through reinvestment or redevelopment
Dark tourism
Visiting places historically associated with death or tragedy
Pilgrimage
A site that people travel to as an Act of religious devotion
Hajj
The Muslim Pilgrimage to Mecca, which all Muslims are expected to undertake if possible
UNESCO
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organisation which is an Agency of the United Nations responsible for which sites are deserving of special attention
World heritage site
A site that is through to be of outstanding importance to the world and future generations and therefore deserves special protection
Cultural tourism
Tourism that includes attending events, ceremonies and festivals
Sports tourism
Tourism that involves travelling to partake in active or spectator sports. Many sporting events are great tourist attractions e.g. Fifa World Cup, Olympic Games and Grand Prixs.
Leisure tourism
Tourists travelling for their own enjoyment and pleasure, or to take a relaxing holiday. E.g. cruises, city breaks, beach holidays
Nature tourism
Tourism that involves tourists visiting natural areas to
appreciate nature. Most of these activities can be described as
Ecotourism, engaging in tourism/travel that is environmentally responsible. E.g. whale watching, trekking, safaris, bird watching, conservation holidays
Adventure tourism
Can mean discovering a more far flung destination or travelling to an area to partake in adventurous sports E.g. rock climbing
Wellness
The state of physical or spiritual health
Wellness tourism
Tourism that involves taking holidays or trips to engage in activities that make people feel physically or spiritually better
Digital free tourism
A new type of wellness tourism that involves visiting/staying in a digital free destination and engaging in digital free activities
Business tourism
Tourism that involves people travelling for MICE – meetings, incentives, conferences and events
Education tourism
Tourism that involves engaging in educational activities e.g. learning languages, attending summer schools, to carry out research
Gateway
a place where travellers enter or leave a country or destination, including airports, seaports, railway stations and coach and bus stations
Hub
a central transport facility, such as an airport, from which other transport facilities operate, such as buses, coaches, trains and taxis
IATA code
a unique three letter code issued to every airport in the world by the International Air Transport Association
Tourism receiver
a destination that attracts or receives tourists
Tourism generator
a country from which tourists originate
Berth
a designated place for a ship to moor in a port
