Unit 2 - Key Area 3 - Reproduction Flashcards
What is sexual reproduction?
Sexual reproduction is the process by which members of a species produce offspring through the production and fusion of gametes (sex cells)
How are gametes formed?
Each human body cell contains 46 chromosomes arranged as 2 sets (diploid). New body cells are made by the process of mitosis.
A human sex cell contains 23 chromosomes, 1 set of chromosomes (haploid). sex cells are also called gametes.
New gametes are made in the sex organs.
Describe the male reproductive system
Sperm are produced in the testis
Describe the female reproductive system
Eggs are produced in the ovaries
Describe the sexual reproduction system in flowering plants
Pollen is produced in the anthers
Ovules are produced in the ovary
What is fertilisation
Fertilisation is the fusion of the nuclei of 2 haploid gametes to produce a diploid zygote, which divides to form an embryo
