Unit 1 - Key Area 1 - Cell Structure Flashcards
What are unicellular organisms?
Unicellular organisms are one cell
What are multicellular organisms?
Multicellular organisms are made up of many different types of cells.
What makes up the cells ultrastructure?
Cells have organelles (structures) inside which make up the cells ultrastructure.
What is the function of the nucleus?
It controls all the cell activities.
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
It is the site of chemical reactions.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It allows the exit/entry of substances.
What is the function of the mitochondria?
It is the site of aerobic respiration.
What is the function of ribosomes?
It is the site of protein synthesis.
What is the function of the chloroplasts?
It is the site of photosynthesis.
What is the function of the vacuole?
It holds cell sap.
What is the function of the plant cell wall?
It supports the cell and stops it bursting.
It is made of cellulose.
What do animal and plant cells have in common?
Cell Membrane
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Ribosomes
Mitochondria
What do plant cells have that animal cells don’t?
Chloroplast
Vacuole
Cell Wall
What are bacterial cell walls made of?
Bacterial cell walls are made of a different material than plant and fungal cell walls (not cellulose).
What is the function of the bacterial cell wall?
It supports the cell and stops it bursting.
It is made of different materials than cellulose.
What is the function of the plasmid?
It is small, circular DNA molecules.
What is the function of the large circular DNA?
It contains genes coding for bacterial proteins.

What are fungal cell walls made of?
Fungal cell walls are made of a different material than plant and bacterial cell walls (not cellulose).
What do some fungal cells have that others don’t?
Vacuole
