Extended Writing Question Flashcards
When does fermentation take place?
Fermentation takes place when oxygen is not
present.
Where does fermentation take place?
It begins and is completed in the cytoplasm.
Describe the breakdown of glucose
Glucose is broken down to two molecules of
pyruvate.
Enough energy is released to yield two
molecules of ATP.
This is the only energy made during this
process.
Describe fermentation in animal cells
In animal cells, the pyruvate molecules are
converted to lactate.
Animal cells: Glucose –> lactate + energy
Describe fermentation in plant and yeast cells
In plant and yeast cells, they are converted
to carbon dioxide and ethanol.
Plant and yeast cells: Glucose –> ethanol + carbon dioxide + energy
