Unit 2: (i) Skin Care Flashcards
What is the type of light rays that the sun gives off which is damaging to our skin?
UV rays.
What is UV light capable of doing?
Breaking chemical bonds.
Is UV light always damaging?
No we need some exposure to UV rays in order for our skin to produce Vitamin D.
What can too much UV light do to our skin?
Age skin and cause sunburn.
What protein does UV radiation break down?
Collagen.
What are 2 substances which are used to prevent skin cancer?
Sunscreen and sunblock.
What is the difference between sunscreen and sunblock?
Sunscreen contains compounds which filter the UV light so less UV light reaches the skin.
Sun block contains compounds which reflect the UV rays so that it does not reach the skin at all.
What are the 3 types of UV rays?
UVA
UVB
UVC.
What can over exposure to UVA and UVB cause?
Numerous health problems involving the skin and eyes.
What type of substances can be formed when the UV rays break the chemical bonds in the skin?
Free radicals.
What can occur due to the formation of free radicals?
A chain reaction.
How many stages are there in this reaction?
3.
What is stage 1 in the free radical chain reaction called?
Initiation.
How can initiation be identified?
There is no unpaired electrons on the left but there is one on the right.
Is UV light needed after it has begun the reaction?
No.
