Unit 2: (a) Systematic Carbon Chemistry Flashcards
What is a homologous series?
A family of compounds with similar chemical properties that can be represented by the same general formula.
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound which ONLY contains hydrogen and carbon.
What is the general formula for the alkanes?
Cn H2n+2
Are alkanes saturated or unsaturated?
Saturated
What does it mean to be saturated?
The compound contains carbon to carbon single bonds only.
What is the name of the first 4 alkanes?
Methane, Ethane, Propane, Butane
What is the general formula for the alkenes?
Cn H2n
Are alkenes saturated or unsaturated?
Unsaturated
Name the first 4 alkenes:
Ethene, Propene, Butene, Pentene
In methane an alkene?
No
What is the general formula for cycloalkanes?
Cn H2n
Are the cycloalkanes saturated or unsaturated?
Saturated
What is the name of the first cycloalkane?
Cyclopropane
What is the general formula for the alkynes?
Cn H2n-2
Are the alkynes saturated or unsaturated?
Unsaturated
The presence of what bond makes the cycloalkanes unsaturated?
Carbon to carbon tripple bond
What is the functional group of the alkynes?
Carbon to carbon tripple bond
Why are alkenes more reactive than alkanes?
Because they contain a carbon to carbon double bond.
What happens to the double bond during an addition reaction?
It breaks open and the reactant molecules add across it.
What are the 3 types of addition reaction?
Hydrogenation, Bromination, Hydration
What is added during hydrogenation?
Hydrogen.
What is added during bromination?
Bromine
What is added during hydration?
Water.
What is an isomer?
Isomers are compounds with the same molecular formula but different structural formula.
