Unit 2: (f) Proteins Flashcards
What are proteins made of?
Alpha amino acids.
How many functional groups does an amino acid contain?
2
What are the 2 functional groups in an amino acid?
Amine group and the carboxyl group.
What makes an amino acid an alpha amino acid?
It has both functional groups attached to the same carbon.
What are essential amino acids?
Amino acids that can only be obtained through diet.
What do all proteins contain?
Nitrogen.
What link do proteins contain?
Peptide/ amide link.
How are proteins made?
Proteins are made when amino acids undergo condensation polymerisation.
What happens to proteins during digestion?
Proteins are hydrolysed =.
What are the 2 main types of protein?
Fibrous and Globular.
What are the properties of a fibrous protein?
Long linear chains.
What are the properties of a globular protein?
Folded chains almost spherical in shape.
What is an example of both types of protein?
Fibrous- collagen and globular- insulin.
What are enzymes?
Biological catalysts.
What will hydrolyse proteins?
Either an acid or an enzyme.
