Unit 2 Fluid, Electrolyte And Acid Base Balance Flashcards
Osmosis
Is the movement of pure solvent (liquid) across a membrane.
Diffusion
Is the process by which substances move across the membrane until they are even,y distributed in the available space.
Intracellular
Fluid within a cell
Extracellular
Fluid outside a cell in another
Hyponatremia
A deficit of sodium in the blood. Most common electrolyte imbalance.
Hypernatremia
Occurs when the sodium level rises Abdou each 145 mEq/L.
Electrolytes
Molecules that have atomic particles that are capable of conducting and electrical current and can undergo separation of their atom into electrically charged ions when place in water.
Hypokalemia
Occurs when the potassium levels falls below 3.5 mEq/L and has a variety of causes.
Hyperkalemia
Occurs when the serum potassium level rises about 5.0 mEq/L. This mechanical disruption of cell membranes causes a shift of K from the ICF to the ECF.
Alkalosis
Excess of alkaline or decrease of acid substances in the blood and body fluids.
Acidosis
Excess acid or depletion of alkaline substances in the blood and body tissue.
