Unit 1 Immune System Flashcards
Retrovirus
Virus that only have ribonucleic acid (RNA) as their genetic material. Differs from other virus because of an enzyme called reverse transcriptase which helps the virus replicate and place its genetic material in DNA of the host cell.
HIV
Human immunodeficiency virus
The virus affects the body’s ability to fight off an array of infections and disease.
Karposis Sarcoma
Is one of the most common causes of malignancy in HIV positive people and is more common in HIC infected men than women.
KS is caused by HIV type 8 and doesn’t usually cause death.
Opportunistic Infections
Are disease caused by microorganism comply present in the environment or rite body that only cause disease when there is weakening or suppression of the immune system.
Antiretroviral
Acting, used, or effective against retroviruses. All 4 drugs, which inhibit HIV protease and thus interfere with viral maturation and replication of the HIV disease.
Immunity
The quality or state of being immune to development of a pathogenic microorganism.
Health Care Associated Infections
Infections recieved while people are recovering health care for another condition. Usually due to poor standard precautions.
Neoplasm
AN abnormal mass of tissue that forms when cells grown and divide more then they should or do not die when they should.
AIDS
Caused by the HIV virus and can develop if HIV is not treated.
Cryptosporidium
Is a micro organism parasite that causes the diarrheal disease cryptosporidiosis.
