Democracy
A form and philosophy
of rule derived from the Greek demos
(people) and kratos (rule) , and means mob rule
or rule by the many, and is usually characterized
by elections and the rule of law.
French revolution
The french population overthrew the monarchy and established the first modern nation state.
Cultural globalization
This refers to the spreading of cultural products and values around the world.
Political globalization
This refers to the establishment of coalitions or institutions ro coordinate the actions of multiple states.
Identity Politics
This refers to political movements, ideologies, and practices that center around the interests and experiences of specific social identity groups, such as race, gender, etc.
Jurisdiction
Legal authority granted to a legal entity to enact justice
Legitimacy
Acceptance by the members of the political community that those in positions of authority have the right to govern
Nation
A group of people who share a sense of common identity and who typically believe they should be self-governing within their homeland
National (popular) sovereignty
The idea that a nation-state possesses the ultimate authority and power to govern their own territories without external influence
National Self-Determination ( Liberation)
The idea that nations should have the right to determine their political status, including choosing to have their own sovereign state
Civic Nationalism
Nationalism based on the shared poltiical values and political history of those who are citizens of a country
Nationalism
The idea that the nation-state is the best form of political community, and that a nation should have its own self-governing state.
Princeps Senatus
Translates to “First of the Senate”. This was a position given to the Roamn Emperor for life and was an important legislative role.
