Why Scope of Practice Is Important
your scope of practice entails coaching pre-designed workout
Templates for members. This means that you are adequately skilled to deliver these workouts
effectively and safely. It is important to stay within the defined scope of practice and refrain
from providing services or interventions that fall outside your qualifications and expertise.
By adhering to your scope of practice, you prioritize the safety and well-being of your members
while ensuring compliance with professional standards and regulations.
Movement Scope of Practice
As an Orangetheory Coach, you are an exercise expert to your members. As a fitness professional, you’re knowledgeable and capable of supporting others in reaching their exercise-related goals. However, as an employee of Orangetheory Fitness, you are expected to be performing your role as a Fitness Coach and remaining within your scope of practice, despite what might be permitted in another fitness environment.
Actions within your SOP related to movement include:
Providing safe options for members on the weight floor
Discussing how proper posture and exercise form result
in efficient movement patterns and performance
Discussing potential injury risks of improper posture or exercise form
Identifying improper or inefficient movement patterns or exercise
form to provide the above guidance
not that SOP
Do not prescribe recommended exercises, modalities, or stretches to members
that are outside of the Orangetheory Fitness Library
Do not publicize your own personally curated workouts
Do not diagnose injuries or prescribe rehabilitative movements or plans
Do not provide specialized exercise prescriptions for specialty populations including
but not limited to pregnancy and post-partum, children, osteoarthritic individuals,
or known health conditions even if additionally certified to do so
Do not prescribe plans for recovery outside of the aforementioned talking points
Do not recommend starting, stopping, or changing medications or supplements
that might impact exercise performance or heart rate response
SOP: Talking About Heart Rate Training
Orangetheory is the leader in heart rate-based interval training.
You should be able to communicate the variables that impact
heart rate response including:
History of exercise
Medications
Nutrition habits
Sleep quality
Caffeine and stimulant use
Alcohol intake
You’re an expert on OTF, so it’s great to discuss the individualized
approach to the OTF maximum heart rate algorithm.
SOP: Performing Emergency Actions
Keeping members safe is your top priority. You should be able to identify signs and symptoms of a potential adverse event, and also interpret actions or reported symptoms that a member may need to cease exercising. You should never diagnose an illness or injury or recommend treatment protocols. However, you’re able to make the decision to enact the Studio’s emergency action plan if a member is reporting the following:
Chest discomfort
Shortness of breath out of proportion with the effort level being coached
Signs and symptoms of a cardiac event, such as an elevated heart rate out of proportion with the effort level being coached
Dizziness or pale color (Pallor)

For proper treatment or diagnosis, you should refer a member to a medical provider to be checked out for readiness to return to exercise before returning to the Studio. If someone is experiencing limping or impaired gait it is within your SOP to encourage the member to cease exercise until cleared by a medical doctor or physical therapist to return to the Studio.
