Unit 2 Flashcards
What is the difference between taxonomy and phylogeny?
Taxonomy is based on comparative biology (physical properties/ morphology) while phylogeny is based on molecular similarities
Taxonomy is grouped into taxons while phylogeny is grouped into clades
What are the different taxons from most inclusive to least inclusive?
DID KING PHILIP CROSS OCEANS FOR GOOD SPICES?
Domain
Kingdom
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species
How can you define species?
They are able to breed among themselves and produce fertile offsprings
How do you write the binomial system of nomenclature?
Genus species
Underlined to show italics/latin
What is the history of classification?
2 kingdoms: plantae and animalia -Linnaeus
5 kingdoms: Monera, protista, fungi, plantae, animalia- Whittaker
6 kingdoms: Eubacteria, Archaebacteria, fungi, protista, plantae and animalia- Woese
What are the three domains in Woeses phylogeny? What do they represent?
Bacteria: common bacteria
Archae: odd bacteria
Eukarya: everything else
What are the 3 domains distinguished by?
Cell type
Cell size
Cell wall composition
Degree of cellularity
Structure of DNA
Reproduction
What are the characteristics of Domain Bacteria
-prokaryotic cell
-no nucleus
-smaller than 10 microns
-uses binary fission to reproduce
-has peptidoglycan in cell wall
-unicellular
What are the characteristics of Domain Archaea
-prokaryotic cell
-no nucleus
-smaller than 10 microns
-uses binary fission to reproduce
-no peptidoglycan in cell walls
-unicellular
What are the characteristics of Domain Eukarya
-eukaryotic cell
-has a nucleus
-between 10 to 100 microns
-unicellular and multicellular
-no binary fission:sexual or asexual
-no peptidoglycan in cell wall
What fixations does domain bacteria have?
Nitrogen and carbon fixations
What does extremophiles mean?
Favor extreme conditions: found in domain Archaea
What are the characteristics of Kingdom Protista
-complex single cell/multicellular
-absorb, produce or ingest food
What are the characteristics of Kingdom Fungi?
-Specialized complex unicellular/multicellular
-absorb food
What are the characteristics of Kingdom Plantae?
-specialized complex multicellular forms
-produce food
