unit 14 Flashcards
what is a solution
a homogenous mixture of two or more substances in relative amounts that can be varied continuously up to what is called the limit of solubility
equation for molarity
molarity= number of moles of solute / liters of solution
m= n/V
aqueous
this means dissolved in water
heterogeneous
a mixture that does not have uniform compisition
pure substance
an element or compound
suspension
what separates into multiple layers
colloids
clouds, milk, fog
homogeneous
a mixture with uniform composition
solution
a solute dissolves in a solvent
alloy
mixture of metals
mixture
multiple pure substances
chromatography
separates substances based on their size and polarity
distillation
separates substances based on their boiling points
filtration
seperates a liquid from a solid (left with pure liquid)
decanting
separates a liquid from a solid (usually a suspension with solid on the bottom)
crystallization
separates a solid from a liquid (you get pure solid)
solute
A substance that is dissolved in a solution
solvent
substance (molecule) with the ability to dissolve other substances (solutes) to form a solution
