agenda setting
Agenda-setting theory describes the “ability to influence the importance placed on the topics of the public agenda”. With agenda setting being a social science theory, it also attempts to make predictions.
citizen journalists
The concept of citizen journalism is based upon public citizens “playing an active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analyzing, and disseminating news and information.”
content regulations
an obligation on broadcasters to give all candidates equal access to the media. fairness doctrine. a principle that formerly obligated broadcasters to present both sides of an issue. FCC. the government agency charged with regulating the electronic media.
deep background
A term that is used in the United States, though not consistently. Most journalists would understand “deep background” to mean that the information may not be included in the article but is used by the journalist to enhance his or her view of the subject matter, or to act as a guide to other leads or sources.
equal time rule
The equal-time rule specifies that U.S. radio and television broadcast stations must provide an equivalent opportunity to any opposing political candidates who request it.
framing
activities that help determine which issues are taken up by political actors and institutions. priming. a process of preparing the public to take a particular view of an event or a political actor. framing. the power of the media to influence how events and issues are interpreted.
mass media
The mass media is a diversified collection of media technologies that reach a large audience via mass communication. The technologies through which this communication takes place include a variety of outlets.
muckraking
the action of searching out and publicizing scandalous information about famous people in an underhanded way.
media effects
In media studies, media psychology, communication theory and sociology, media influence and media effects are topics relating to mass media and media culture effects on individual or audience thought, attitudes and behavior. The influence of mass media has an effect on many aspects of the human life.
news media
The news media or news industry are forms of mass media that focus on delivering news to the general public or a target public. These include print media, broadcast news, and more recently the Internet.
narrowcasting
the transmission of television programs, especially by cable, to a comparatively localized or specialist audience.
off the record
not made as an official or attributable statement.
on background
First, it’s worth defining the term. “On background” usually means that a reporter can use the information you give them, but cannot name or quote you directly. That’s different than “off-the-record,” which theoretically means that the information you share with a reporter cannot be used in any way.

used in reference to the making of an official or public statement.
press briefing
A news conference or press conference is a media event in which newsmakers invite journalists to hear them speak and, most often, ask questions. A joint press conference instead is held between two or more talking sides.
