Unit 1.2(cii) - Proteins, Ligand binding changes the conformation of a protein Flashcards
What is a ligand?
A substance that can bind to a protein
What causes does ligand binding have?
Causes change to the conformation so there is a functional change in the protein
Where do allosteric interactions occur?
Between/at spatially distinct sites of a protein. Modulators bind at secondary binding sites
What do many allosteric proteins have?
Multiple sub-units (have Quaternary structure)
What is cooperativity?
The binding of a substrate molecule in one active site can alter the affinity of other sites for the substrate
What are modulators?
Modulators regulate the activity of the enzyme when they bind to the allosteric site
What happens following the binding of a modulator to an allosteric enzyme?
The conformation of the enzyme changes and this alters the affinity of the active site for the substrate
An allosteric enzyme is an enzyme that can
have its activity altered by a ligand called a modulator
