Unit 1.1(d) - Detecting proteins using antibodies Flashcards
1
Q
What are antigens?
A
A foreign protein found on microbes
2
Q
What are antibodies?
A
- Proteins
- Made by B-lymphocytes as part of the immune repsonse
- Specific to only one antigen
3
Q
What are immunoassays?
A
Technique used to identify and dectect sppecific proteins
4
Q
Immunoassay steps
A
- Antibody specific to the target antigen is bound to the surface of the multiwell plate
- Sample added and if target antigen is present it will bind to the antibody
- Antibody specific to to the antigen is linked to a chemical label
- the label is often a reporter enzyme producing a colour change
5
Q
What is bright field microscopy?
A
Used to examine whole organisms, parts of organisms, or thin sections of disected or individual cells
6
Q
What is flourescence microscopy?
A
Uses specific flouresent labels to bind to and visualise certain molecules
7
Q
What do aseptic techniques prevent?
A
Cross-contamination by unwanted microorganisms
