1.5(a) - Protein control of cell division Flashcards
1
Q
What is the cytoskeleton?
A
The cytoskeleton gives mechanical support and shape to cells
2
Q
What are microtubules?
A
Hollow cylinders composed of tubulin
3
Q
What do microtubules do/what is their function?
A
Microtubules control the movement of membrane bound organelles and chromosomes within the cell
4
Q
What are the two phases in the cell cycle?
A
- The mitotic phase
- The interphase
5
Q
What are the 3 phases within the interphase?
A
- G1 phase is the (first) growth stage
- S phase is when DNA replication takes place
3.G2 phase is a further growth phase
6
Q
What two processes does the mitotic phase involve?
A
Mitosis and cytokinesis
7
Q
What is cytokinesis?
A
When the cell is divided into two daughter cells
8
Q
Mitosis steps
SM = Spindle microtubules
A
- Prohpase - DNA condenses into chromosmes (2 sister chromatids). Nuclear membrane breaksdown and SM extend form the MTOC by polymerisation and attach to choromosomes via kinetorches
- Metaphase - Chromosomes are aligned at the metaphase plate
- Anaphase - Spindle microtubules shorten by depolymeristaion, sister chromatids are seperated and chromosomes pulled to opposite poles
- Telephase - Chromosomes decondense and nuclear membranes are formed around them
