Psychic energy
Eros (libido)- sexual energy, need to get rid of it, creation, desire
Thanatos- 2nd psychic energy, Death and destruction, challenge people, competitive side
Defense Mechanisms
techniques to minimize anxiety and stress
ego is synonymous with our self esteem
we do things that defend our self esteem
Denial, Repression, Suppression
Denial- refusal to accept
Repression- bury into unconscious, unable to remember
Suppression- keeping ideas in the preconscious, rise to the surface, block the ideas from crossing your mind
Displacement, Projection, Rationalization
Displacement- transferring negative emotions, cant yell back, always maladaptive
Projection- attributing your own flaws onto others, insecure and dont accept but you see it in others
Rationalization- swapping the truth for a socially desirable excuse, manipulate, gaslighting
Regression, Anticipation, Humor Sublimation
Regression- less mature emotional response
Anticipation- anxious preparation and preoccupation, opposite of denial
Humor- self depreciation, dark humor
Sublimation- redirecting energy and emotion, accept something bad and redirect energy into something good

Ayurveda - body type of air (VATA), earth (KAPHA), fire (PITTA)
Hippocrates Humours - personality caused by phlegm, bile, and blood in your body.
Jungian types- cluster people into 4 personality types
sensing - earth type (pragmatic, down to earth)
intuition - fire type (passion and illogical)
feeling - water type (emotions and connection)
thinking - air type (rational and logical)
Criticisms of Myers-Briggs MBTI
- not empirically supported
forced choice- must choose between two. Emotions v logic, fact v theory
categories vs distributions- chose is you are an extravert or introvert
Cattell- Lexical approach
Statistical approach- 16 factors- best personality trait recognition
Big 5 factor model- most widespread personality we have today
extraversion/introversion- more energy vs draining to be around people
agreeable/disagreeable- warm cooperative vs putting yourself first critical
conscientiousness/casual- organized responsible vs organized perfectionist
emotionally stable/neurotic-
openness/closed- creative progressive vs safer stuff in life
HEXACO
developed by Lee and Ashton, is lexical in many languages, and adds HONESTY/HUMILITY to the Big 5
