Unit 1, lesson 7: converging/diverging lenses Flashcards

1
Q
What are lenses
A
They change the appearance of objects, can make them larger, smaller, inverted, etc, made of thin plastic or glass with at least one curved side
2
Q
Do light rays meet on the other side of converging lenses
A
Yes
3
Q
Do light rays meet on the other side of diverging lenses
A
No
4
Q
Converging lenses
A
Two convex mirrors fused together, light can pass through from both diretions = two focal points (per side). THINK OF DIAGRAM RIGHT NOW.
5
Q
Rules for converging lenses, and dose salt change
A
- An incident ray traveling parallel to the PA will refract through the focal point behind the lens
- An incident ray traveling through the focal point will refract parallel to the PA.
- An incident ray traveling directly through the center of the lens will not bend and go straight through
SALT will change depending on object location
6
Q
Diverging lenses
A
Two concaved mirrors fused together, two sides = two focal points. DIAGRAM
7
Q
Rules for converging lenses SALT
A
- An incident ray parallel to the PA will refract AS IF it’s coming for the focal point on the same side of the object
- An incident ray pointed at the focal point on the other side of the lens will refract parallel to the PA.
- An incident ray pointed at the center of the lens will travel right through without bending
SALT is always the same
S: smaller
A: upright
L: between object and lens
T: virtual
