Unit 1: Chapter 7: The Nervous System Flashcards
Composed of the brain and spinal cord
Central Nervous System
Composed of the cranial nerves + spinal nerves
Peripheral Nervous System
The structural and functional units of the nervous system that can conduct impulses and repair but can’t divide
Neurons
Contains nucleus, nissl bodies and other organelles
Cell BOdy
What is cell body called in CNS?
Nuclei
What is cell body in PNS?
ganglia
Receives impoulses and conducts them to cell body
Dendrites
Conducts action potentials away from cell body
Axon
Gaps between myelin sheaths that facilitate conduction
Nodes of Ranvier
Three types of neuorns
- Sensory
- Motor
- Association/Inter
Single, short process that splits into two
Pseudounipolar
2 processes ( 1 dendrite + 1 axon)
bipolar
several dendrites + 1 axon
multipolar
Don’t conduct impulses, but can divide. Provide support and protection ofr neurons
Neuroglia
Form myuelin sheaths around peripheral axons in the PNS
schwann cells
SUpport cell bodies within the ganglia of the PNS
Satellite cells
Form myelin sheath around central axons in the CNS
oligodendrocytes
Migrate + phagocytize foreign or degernated material in the CNS
microglia
Regulate the external environment of neurons in the CNS
astorcytes
LIne brain ventricles and central spinal canal and produce cerbrospinal fluid in CNS
Ependymal Cells
Outer cytoplasmic layer of schwann cells
Neurilemma
Unmyelinated axons and cell bdoies
Gray matter
Myelinated axons
White matter
Resting membrane potential
-70mV
