what is a reflex?
Inborn (born with them), automatic response to stimulation
-Assessed at birth
-tests physical and psychological state at birth
why do we need reflexes?
they have survival value or help establish social interactions
-Need to suck to be able to eat
-Some also have a social value
when do most reflexes disappear by?
after 6 months
Babinski reflex
toes fanning out when you touch the bottom of the foot
Blink reflex
eyes close in response to loud noise or bright light
-Never goes away!
Moro reflex
throws arms out and then inward (embracing) in response to bright light or loud noise
-startled
Palmar reflex
Grasp onto object when placed in its hand
Rooting reflex
Touching the cheek makes them turn their head towards it
Stepping reflex
Disappears because it is replaced with more controlled bx’s
what scoring test is used on newborns to test physical and intellectual capabilities?
Apgar Score (0-10)
what do each of the letters in the Apgar score stand for? what are they testing?
Appearance: skin color
Pulse: HR
Grimace: reflexes
Activity: muscle tone
Respiration: breathing (most common one to have a low score)
what are the six newborn states? how many hours are spent in each?
active sleep (8hrs)
quiet sleep (8hrs)
crying (2hrs)
drowsiness (1hr)
alert awake (2hrs)
active awake (2hrs)
what is the definition of a newborn state?
organized pattern of bx’s
what happens to the amount of REM sleep as you age?
it decreases compared to non-REM
what theory explains why REM sleep decreases as we age? what is the theory?
Autostimulation Theory
-REM is higher in newborns b/c it helps develop vision during sleep
