Unerupted teeth Flashcards
What are the requirements prior to extracting a tooth?
medical and dental history
presenting complaints
investigations: radigraphs
What are the surgical equipment?
SHAPERS
scalpel (usually number 15) Handpiece and Burs A selection of extraction forceps Periosteal elevator (Howarths) Elevators (couplands, warrick james, cryers) Retractor (killners, austins) Suture, needle holders, tissue forceps Retractors: austins and kilners
What are the principles of soft tissue flap design?
increase vision
adequate access
remove bone
avoid important anatomical structures
What are the princples to flap design?
broad base large enough full thickness margins close on sound bone include interdental locating papilla
What re the options for flaps?
simple envelope flap
2 sided flap
three sided flap
What are the principles to a simple envelope flap?
there are no relieving incisions and can be extended mesailly and distally as and when needed. it is easy to close and suture through the interdental contacts
What are the advnatges to a two sided flap?
good vision, can be extended distally
good blood supply
easy replacement
T/F we can remove roots without a flap?
T
use the anatomy
can be divided through the socket
and then individual roots removed separately which is ideal for roots which have conflicting paths of withdrawl
Where should relieving incisons be placed?
they should be placed a tooth unit anteriorly and ensure the flap will close on sound bone
Where can you remove bone from when gaining access to the root?
alveolar ridge
from the apex which helps preserve bone
What must you be careful of when relieving in the lower arch?
the mental nerve
Where can the relieving incison be place in edentulous areas?
along the ridge as a single reliving incsion
How should you angle the bur when gaining access to the roots?
vertically to gain access for the elevator and this helps preserve buccal bone
WHen should sutures be used?
for primary closure of flaps and when there have been multiple extractions
