What is the pathology behind alveolar osteitis?
Loss of blood clot leaving alveolar bone exposed to oral environment

Alveolar osteitis
What is the indicence for dry socket?
1-20% routine extraction
30% surgical third molar
What are the symptoms of dry socket?
Occurs few days after tooth has been extracted
Painful
Associated with a bad taste and odour

How do you mange dry socket?
Consider X-ray for trained root
Irrigate socket with saline or CHX
Pack alveogyl, zinc oxide eugenol pack (non resorb), BIPP or lidocaine based grls and ointment
Anlagesics
What is the advantage of using alveogyl compared to the other agents?
Resorbable
What is BIPP?
Bismuth subnitrite and idoform paste
What is in 100g of alveogyl?
- 7g butamben
- 8g idoform
- 7g eugenol
Olive oil, spearmint, sodium lauryl
What are the most common type of bacteria in dental abscesses?
Gram neg anaerobic bacilli
Which antibiotic of would you most commonly prescribe for dental abscesses?
Amoxicillin
Adults 500mg tds for five days or
Pheoxymethylpenicllin 500-1000mg qds 5 days
If allergic
Clarithromycin: 500mg bd for 5 dys
What could you consider for a severe infection?
Add in metronidazole
400mg tds 5 days if very severe or spreading
If allergic to metron then
Clinidamycin 300mg qds 5 days
