Origin: temporal bone in temporal fossa
Insert: fibres go beneath zygomatic arch to inset into coronoid process

Function: elevate and retract

What is its function?

A

Originates:

  1. Larger: anterior two thirds zygomatic process of maxilla, zygomatic arch
  2. Smaller: posterior 1/3 of zygomatic arch

Insertion:

  1. larger superficial head lateral surface of angle/ramus
  2. Ramus and coronoid process

Function: elevate mandible

What is its function?

A

Origin:
Upper head: infratemporal crest of greater wing of sphenoid
Lower head: lateral surface of lateral pterygoid plate of sphenoid

Insert: capsule and disc of TMJ and ptyergod fovea on mandibular condyle

Function: profusion, lateral excursion, assist depressin and opening of jaw
