Understanding the background to volcanic hazards Flashcards
What is an Icelandic eruption?
Often issue eruptions, large outpouring of lava with low viscosity
What is an Hawaiian eruption?
Characterised by the eruption of lava, which commonly creates lava flows
What is Strombolian eruption?
When the magma is viscous, the locked up gas escapes in a series eruptions, with cinder and lava bombs
What is Vulcanian eruption?
A Vulcanian eruption is a short, violent, relatively small explosion of viscous magma
What is a Pelean eruption?
Very similar to the Plinean eruption but with a sideways outburst and high probability of pyroclastic flows
What is Plinean eruption?
largest and most violent of all the types of volcanic eruptions - very destructive
What is a Krakatoan eruption?
Similar to the Plinean above only removing the summit of the volcano leaving a caldera in its wake
What is an example of a Plinean eruption?
Mount St Helens
