Undernutrition Part 2 Flashcards
Do we have enough food to feed the entire population ?
Look at food production cycle
What is food wastage
Food loss and food waste
Food loss refers to anything that happens to food at the production, distribution, processing stage. This can be attributed to the way it was stored or transported.
Food waste refers to anything that happens to food at the retail level or restaurant because consumers may discard food that is edible
Food wastage is due to food waste primarily in developed countries. T or F
True
Give examples of why food wastage increase in Singapore
Culture
Rising affluences
Population growth
There is excess food production in Asia and South America. T or F
False. Food production is in excess in Europe, Australia and North America
How will you improve food wastage situations?
Reduce food wastage
Improve food distribution
How can supplementation help food industry?
Provision of larger doses of micronutrients
Control deficiency on indvd and population groups
Considerations :
Expensive
Consumer compliance
Define fortification or enrichment and restoration
Deliberately increasing the content of essential micronimutriens in food so as to improve nutrient quality of food supply and provide a public health benefit
Restoration is a tue addition of nutrients that might have been lost during processing
What are the types of fortification
General or mandatory fortification
Target fortification
Market-driven fortification
What is golden rice made of?
Made by biofprtification (natural breeding of plants or genetically modifying them to increase nutritional value.
It has a lot of beta carotene to help in vitamin A deficiency in countries where the staple food is rice
What are the advantages of fortification
Don’t need to change eating habits unlike supplementation where u have to remember to take ur supplements
Provide nutrients at levels which are refelective a well-balanced diet
What are some concerns for fortification
May not reach the poorest sections which require them the most.
Exposure to higher doses or micronutrient in groups that may not require them
Folate fortification may maske vitamin B12 deficiency
Describe “increasing dietary diversity”
Programmed that increase diversity focus on increasing access to both quantity and variety of micronutrient foods such as vegetables, fruits and health oils
What is the advantage of increasing dietary diversity?
Improve overall dietary quality and not just address deficiency or specific nutrient.
What are the different types of delivery platforms?
Homestead farming
