9
Q

what do children in Ghana usually suffer from? Describe this condition.

A

Kwashiorkor: sickness the child gets when a new child is born. Mum will stop breastfeeding the child when a new baby comes. First child’s diet drastically changes to gruels and starchy roots. These are rich in calorie but low in protein. This new diet results in increased risk of infection and parasites that increases needs.

Q

Descibe Marasmus and the causes of it.

A

chronic sever energy deficiency and resultant deficiency of other nutrients.
reduction of fat
reduced metabolism
susceptible to infection

Caused by insufficient breastfeeding . Mums may switch formula needs and because they may not be able to afford the feeds, they dilute the feeds resulting in feeds having low energy content.

16
Q

What are the conceptual causes of undernutrition

A

Intermediate cause: disease and inadequate diet
Underlying cause : food insecurity, lack of access to healthcare, unhealthy environments.
Basic causes : social and economic causes

17
Q

Inadequate diet can be due to?

A

Decreased nutrient intake due to famine or loss of appetite
Decreased nutrient absorption due to inadequate intrinsic factor production
Drug interactions leading to decreased nutrient utilization
Increased nutrient losses due to diarrhea
Increased nutrient requirement

Intake, absorption, utilization, losses, requirement

18
Q

Deceive the infection- malnutrition cycle

A

Illness and undernutrition interact to form a vicious cycle
When a person has inadequate diet, can result in weight loss and increased susceptibility to illness. In the face of malnutrition, illness can be more severe and last longer
Illness of often accompanied by loss of appetite
These factors combined then results in poor diet and the cycle repeats itself

19
Q

What are the 3 underlying causes

A

Food insecurity
Inadequate care
Inadequate services and unhealthy environment

20
Q

What is availability , access , utilization?

A

Availability: sufficient qtty or appropriate food is physically available
Access : income or other resources are adequate to obtain ufficinr and appropriate food
Utilization: food is appropriately used and allocated to household members

21
Q

What is inadequate care?

A

Caring practices is the way we feed and nurture the vulnerable. This can be done through formal or informal settings

22
Q

Explain inadequate services and unhealthy environment

A

Lack of proper sanitation of clean water and hygiene in home environment
Healthcare services may be too far away and expensive

23
Q

What could be the basic causes?

A

Cultural or ideological
Attitude towards women education or marginalization of certain communities
Income inequality
Food price instability
