language is tied to social circumstances; important type of communication; use varies from place to place, subculture to subculture
- New York has highest use of profanity
- increase in amount and spread of profanity across the country –> loses its punch and shock fact
- use of fuck is more widespread; loss of sexual meaning; loss of power (seen less often in graffiti)
- why so commonplace? movies? 1960s?casual lifestype? music? radio? newspapers?
- the most taboo prfanity has changed ( 19th century = religious, 20th century = sex, 21st century = gender and ethnic slurs)

stage dramatury
we play different roles in life; just like actors on a stage
-can play roles well or not
front stage vs. back stage
-front stage = public, more formal, impersonal, be more careful
-backstage = in private, more informal, more personal, when with people you are comfortable with
-deep backstage= intrapersonal, when totally alone (where you can pick your nose)
