3 Elements of Adaptability
Cognitive, Emotional, Dispositional
We must exhibit at least TWO of the three elements…
To reach an effective level of adaptability
Cognitive Flexibility
Working plan A, while having a Plan B,C, and D.
Emotional Flexibility
Ability to change our approach to deal with our own and others emotions.
Dispositional Flexibility
Operate from a place of optimism grounded in realism and openness.
Three Roles in the Change Process
Change Sponsors, Change Agents, & Change Targets
Change Sponsors
Initiate change because they have the power to determine why, when, and how changes occur.
Change Agents
Responsible for implementing change initiated by the change sponsor.
Change Targets
Those key players and stakeholders who actually undergo the change-the ones most affected by the new change.
Jansen’s Model of Change
Comfort, Denial, Confusion, Renewal
Four Levels of Change
Knowledge, Attitude, Individual Behavior, & Group Behavior (hardest to change)
Directive Change Cycle
Change Imposed by some external force such as a commander or supervisor
Directive Change Starts with Position Power
Position Power—>Group Behavior—>Individual Behavior—>Attitudes—>Knowledge
Participative Change Cycle
Implemented when new knowledge is made available to the individual or group

Three Phases of Change
Unfreezing, Changing and Refreezing
Unfreezing
Recognize need for change, create felt need, deal w/resistance
Changing
Actual modification of technology, tasks, structure or people.
Refreezing
Burn the bridges, evidence stream, institutionalization,
Innovators
Small percentage of population-those who immediately embrace new ideas.
Early Adopters
See a competitive advantage in adopting new ideas early.
The Early Majority
Makes up one of the largest groups of people, they represent mainstream thinking.
The Late Majority
Other large group in the middle of the curve.
Laggards
Last people to embrace new ideas and they influence no one!
