How many people are elderly?
Older population is growing and by 2020 half of all adults will be 50 and over.
What evidence is there of wealth inequality in the elderly? (5)
In 2010,22% of over 65s were living in poverty compared to 13% of 24-29year olds.
In Scotland 140,000 pensioners have no other income other than state pension and benefits.
Pensioner poverty chance increase if girl.
7% pensioners live in severe poverty.
1 in 10 don’t own their homes.
What is fuel poverty?
When a household have to pay more than 10% their disposable income towards their home. 58% of pensioners are in fuel poverty.
What were government responses to wealth inequalities in the elderly ? (3)
State pension £113.10 per week
Housing benefit - help towards housing costs
Winter fuel payment - £25 for each 7 day period of freezing weather in winter.
What evidence is there of location being a wealth being a wealth inequality? (5)
Poverty is higher in the north of the uk than the south.
Scotland has the highest unemployment rate whereas Northern Ireland has the highest unemployment figure.
England has highest disposable income and Wales has lowest.
Child poverty is worst in Glasgow where 1/3 are living below the poverty line.
In Glasgow 23% of households live in relative poverty.
What evidence is there of wealth inequalities in children and families?(4)
Education suffers massively from wealth inequalities.
By P1 children in poverty can already be up to a year behind developmentally.
University education is often unachievable due to funds.
24,000 families in Scotland are extreme disadvantage. Families usually lose income with children.
Evidence of wealth inequalities in other groups? (4)
NEETS - unemployment rate in 16 and 17 year old is 36% compared to 4.7% of 35-49 year olds.
Unemployed - 1.5 million people aged 50-69 are involuntarily unemployed.
Low income - part time and unskilled jobs are low paid and people often have to rely on benefits. Just over half of those in poverty are working families.
What is the governments response to location wealth inequalities? (2)
National minimum wage and Scottish living wage.
What is the governments response to children and families with wealth inequalities? (3)
Child tax credits- money to help raise a child
Free child care
Abolition of uni fees
What have the government done for other groups and their wealth inequalities?
NEETS- EMA, modern apprenticeships, the youth contract
Unemployed- job-centre plus
Low income - national living wage
