What is evidence of health inequalities in terms of social class? (4)
Three reports were carried out: the black report
The Acheson report
Three cities report 2010
All three reports found significant links between poverty and ill health.
Deaths are 18% higher in most deprived groups
Lifespan affected
Young mothers in poverty find it difficult to ask for help resulting in double mortality rates for their children.
What have the government done for social class? (2)
Scottish government equally well policy - aims to deal with underlying problems of poverty.
Early years frame work - aims to ensure children have the best start in life
What are health inequalities in the elderly? (4)
Least healthy people are over 65 and are more likely to report Ill health.
As people age they are more likely to have mobility problems, arthritis, eyesight and hearing issues and long term illnesses.
In 2008, 32% of people aged 65+ who were committed to hospital were found to be malnourished.
Dementia is main cause of disability.
What are health inequalities in terms of location? (5)
Life expectancy. - scotland has the lowest and England the highest in the UK
Men in most deprived areas life expectancy was 69.9 whereas it was 82.4 for least deprived. East Dunbartonshire has highest life expectancy and Glasgow the lowest by 7.5 years.
Those in rural areas live longer than those in urban areas.
Babies born in Glasgow are expected to live shortest lives of anyone else in Britain.
What is the Glasgow effect?
Refers to people from socially deprived areas like Carlton having lower life expectancy and poor health than those in other deprived cities.

What lifestyle choices are there?
Obesity Poor diet and lack of activity Smoking Alcohol Drugs
What evidence is there that lifestyles choices are a health inequality?
Poor people can’t afford gym and they are more likely to make bad lifestyle choices.
Scotland is the second most obese nation and it can lead to type 2 diabetes, hypertension and premature death.
Lack of activity and diet is the second highest cause of poor health in Scotland. Nearly 2500 per die of inactivity.
Smoking is responsible for 20% of death in Scotland per year. Scotland has the most smokers. Can lead to heart, lung and artery diseases along with a list of cancers.
Alcohol related deaths has doubled in the past 15 years. Scotland has one of the fastest growing liver disease rates in the world.
Drugs most prevalent in deprived areas. Relate to over 500 death each year from 2011 to 2013.
