Where is Rutland Water?
A
Reservoir in the East Midlands , made up of rivers Welland and Nene

Why was it designed?
A
- to supply East Midlands with more water and enough to cope with rapid population of Peterborough
- areas around it are used for recreation and nature reserve
- it is 12km squared big

Economic impacts?
A
- boosts local economy
- around 6km of land was flooded to create the reservoir which included farmland so farmers lost their livelihoods
- creates jobs

Social impacts?
A
- lots of recreational activities take place on and around the reservoir for example windsurfing, sailing , cycling
- many jobs have been created by maintaining reservoir and recreational etc
- schools use reservoir for recreational visits
- two villages were demolished to make way for the reservoir

Environmental impacts?
A
- it’s a Site of Specific Interest (SSSI) which means it’s protected
- hundreds of species of birds live around here and tens of thousands of waterfowl(birds that live on or near water) come over winter
- lots of different organisms live around the reservoir due to the habitats made available such as lagoons and marshes
- ospreys have been reintroduced by the Rutland Water
- large area of land was flooded to create the reservoir which destroyed habitats
