🌊Holderness Coastal management Case Study Flashcards
1
Q
Intro
A
Mainly hard engineering strategies
11.4km of Holderness has been protected by this method
2
Q
Bridlington?
A
4.7km sea wall aswell as wooden groynes
Helps protect the fishing harbour and stabilises beaches
3
Q
Hornsea?
A
Sea wall, helps absorb powerful waves form Arctic Ocean and wooden groynes and rock armour
4
Q
Withernsea?
A
Groynes to create wider beaches and a sea wall helps about not eroding clay cliffs
Rock armour placed in front of the wall after it was damaged by storms in 92
5
Q
Mappleton?
A
2 timber groynes that cost 2 million and were built to protect the village and a coastal road
6
Q
Problems with the strategies
A
- groynes cause narrow beaches as stop material furth down coast
Material produced from erosion normally goes south but with defences the erosion doesn’t happen so they don’t get materials and this increased floods south as nothing to stop them
Spurn Head at risk of being eroded away because less material is being added
Protected areas are becoming headlands which makes maintaining defences expensive
