How did it happen?
There’s a destructive plate margin along west of Indonesia in the Indian Ocean
- 26th December 2004 there was an earthquake, measuring 9.1 on Richter scale
- the plate moved down and cracked and moved very quickly, causing a lot of water to he displaced
- had waves up to 30m high
What countries did it affect?
- was one of the most destructive natural disasters ever
- affected most countries on Indian oCean such as Thailand, Indonesia and India
What were the effects?
Was really bad because there was.no early warning system
-around 230 000 people were killed or missing
- whole villages were destroyed
Over 1.7 million lost their homes
- infrastructure was severely damaged
-5-6 million needed emergency food water and supplies
- millions of fishers lost their livelihoods and tourism suffered, massive economic damage
- salt from water meant plants can’t grow in areas and mangroves coral reefs and forests were destroyed
Short term responses?
- within days hundreds of millions of pounds had been given by foreign govs
- forging countries sent ships planes and soldiers to help rescue people and begin clearing up
Long term responses?
- billions of pounds were given to help re build
- programmes have been set up to re build houses and help get people back to work
- tsunami warning system has been put in place in Indian Ocean
- disaster management plans put in place, volunteers have been trained so that locals know what to do
