🌊Holderness Coastal Erosion Flashcards
Statistics
61km long from Flamborough ahead to Spurn Head
1.8m of land is lost every year
Reasons for rapid erosion
Easily eroded rock type- cliffs are made of Boulder clay
Narrow beaches- supposed to slow waves down and reduce erosion but doesn’t give this protection
People worsen situation- groynes built in mappleton which stops material moving down beach and making them narrower
Powerful waves- faces prevailing wind direction which brings waves from Arcitc oCean , builds in fetch
Impacts on people’s lives
Social
Homes near cliffs at Skipsea are risk of collapsing into sea
Accessibility is limited as roads on cliffs are in danger of collapsing eg Southfield Lane
80 000m of farmland is lost a year
Economic
Property prices have fallen loads for the houses at risk
Businesses at risk from erosion will lose jobs eg Seaside Caravan Park is losing average of 10 pitches a year
GAS TERMINAL AT EASINGTON IS ONLY 25M FROM CLIFF EDGE, ACCOUNTS FOR 25% OF BRITAINS GAS SUPPLY
Environmental Impacts
Sites of Special Scientific Interest are threatened eg the Lagoons
They are separated from the sea by a narrow strip of sand and shingle. if this is eroded it will connect the Lagoons to the sea and they’ll be destroyed
