What is ICZM and how can it benefit people?

Answer 1

Integrated coastal zone management is looking at different sections of the coast and evaluating which areas are the best to protect and which are best to let erode. It can save money by not having to spend money protecting the whole coast as you only protect smaller sections.

What effect does human activity have on coastal landscapes?

Answer 2

Construction- remove sand and gravel from beaches
Coastal management- stop erosion at one area but allow at another
Industry- high economic value so are protected by defences
Agriculture- land is low value and unprotected from coastal erosion

What are some facts about sea level rising?

Answer 3

• rise by 30-100 cm by 2100
• ice sheets and glaciers melt meaning ice on top of land increases sea level
• Antarctic holds 90% of freshwater on our plant
• icebergs have no affect due to the size rising sea level

How will rising sea levels affect coastal processes?

Erosion:

• undercut and collapsing continue to retreat
• wave cut notch will change
• soft rock continues to erode

Deposition:

• landforms at risk of erosion and submergence
• large loss of infrastructure destroyed/abandoned
