UE Myology Clinical Notes Flashcards
What is winging of the scapula? How does this happen?
Paralysis of Serratus Anterior M. usually because of injury to Long Thoracic N.
Scapula “wings” away from the thoracic wall –> aBduction of upper limb beyond the horizontal position difficult
What muscles make up the Rotator cuff? What one is most commonly injured? What happens when there is injury?
SITS: Supraspinatous, Infraspinatus, Teres minor, and Subscapularis Ms.
Supraspinatus
Instability of the Glenohumeral Joint
Where should you strike a reflex hammer to produce a Bicipital Myotactic Reflex? What injury can be suggested if there is no reflex?
Strike thumb over the Bicipital Tendon
Injury to Musculocutaneous N or C5 and C6 anterior rami
What is Biceps Tendinitis? How does it progress into “Popeye Deformity”?
Repetitive movement of the Long Head of the Biceps T. through the Intertubercular Groove –> inflammation and sometimes Crepitus (crackling)
If the tendon dislocates out of the Intertubercular Groove or even separates from Supraglenoid Tubercle –> muscle balling up in the middle of the arm
What are the borders and contents of the Triangular Space?
Teres Minor M., Teres Major M., and Long Head of the Triceps Brachii M.
Circumflex Scapular Artery and Vein
What are the borders and contents of the Quadrangular Space?
Teres Minor M., Teres Major M., and Long and Lateral Heads of the Triceps Brachii M.
Posterior Humeral Circumflex Artery and Vein
Axillary N.
What are the borders and contents of the Triangular Interval?
Teres Major M., and Long and Lateral Heads of the Triceps Brachii M.
Deep Brachial Artery and Vein
Radial Nerve
How do you get “Tennis Elbow”?
Repetitive use of the Superficial Extensor muscles of the Forearm
Pain over the Lateral Epicondyle and down the posterior Forearm
What gets strained when you repeatedly flex and extend the wrist? What is this called?
Periosteum of the Lateral Humeral Epicondyle called Lateral Epicondylitis
What are the medial and lateral borders of the snuff box? What does it contain?
Lateral (anterior): aBductor Pollicis Longus M. and Extensor Pollicis Brevis M.
Medial (posterior): Extensor Pollicis Longus M.
Radial A. (deep to tendons) and Superficial Radial N. (superficial to tendons)
What can be a result of even a superficial injury to the palm that damages the recurrent branch of the Median N.?
Can’t oppose your thumb
What is the Power Grip (palm grasp) of the hand?
Digits acting against palm while wrapped around an object with counter pressure from the Pollux
- long flexors of the digits at the IP joint and intrinsic hand muscles at the MCP joint
What is the Hook Grip of the hand?
carrying a suitcase, consumes less energy than power grip
- flexors of the digits at the IP joints
What is the Precision Handling grip?
Writing
- long flexor and extensors muscles with intrinsic hand muscles to perform fine movements
What is the Pinching position of the hand?
compressing an object between the distal aspect of the 1st and 2nd digits
