How has the Constitutional vagueness of Presidency expanded Presidential powers?
The Take Care Clause ensures that laws are faithfully executed but does not say how. It is the justification for many informal powers such as Executive orders, Privelege, agreements, bully-pulpit, etc.
How has Precedential Action expanded Presidental powers?
Extraordinary use of power expands use for future Presidents. It follows the Stewardship Theory that the President should excercise as much authority as possble to take care of the American people.
How has the Growth of the Executive Branch expanded Presidential powers?
There are far more executive agencies and since the President is the Head of the Bureaucracy (Executive Agencies), it gives the President more power/oversight on variety of activities in country.
How has National Crisis/Modern Emergencies expanded Presidental powers?
The need to act quickly and often unitarily has become constant in foreign agttacks as increased technology, weapons tech, and transportation threatens the nation and the President needs the authority to act quickly.
How has Partisan Politics expanded Presidedential Powers?
Partisanship (loyalty to one’s own party) trumps institutional concerns, and causes Congressional Gridlocks which lead to an increased use of the Executive Order (which in turn, raises tensions between Congress and the President).
What did the 20th Amendment do?
Moved Presidential inauguration from March 4 to January 20 to shrink “lame duck” period where the outgoing President diminishes power/ability to get things done.
What did the 22nd Amendment do?
Prevents President from serving more than two consecutive terms or a total of 10 years if they were Vice President taking the place of incompacitated President.
