Sociolect
A variety of language that is associated with a particular social group or community.
Types of sociolect
Age, Gender, Sexuality, Occupation, Interests, Education
Age sociolect
Language features that speakers and writers use- particulary informal language- are intrinsically linked o their age and generation.
-SLANG
Gender sociolect
Culturally based associations and stereotypes relating to gender can be reflected both in the language used to describe gender, and in the languae used by those who identify with said gender.
Sexuality sociolect
Sexuality can influence and impact our language use, and influence the words we choose, the way we speak and the topics we discuss.
-Can signal sexuality
-Prosodic features particulaly pitch and intonation may be assocciated with some LGBTQIA+ communities.
Occupation sociolect
Language use varies significantly from one job or occupation to another.
-The most common marker of a writer or speaker’s occupation is the use of jargon.
Jargon
Specialised or technical language used by a particular group, profession or field. Often includes terms and phrases that may not be understood by outsiders.
Semantic domain
Refers to categories or field of meaning that group together related words and concepts.
Interest Sociolect
Speakers and writers vary their language when they are with someone who shares their similiar interests.
-Can affect lexical choice as well as the style of language
-Important to consider the situational and cultural context in which an exchange occurs.
Education Sociolect
Most educational institutes use formal SAE, so they are percieved as more educated.
Aspiration sociolect
We can use language to shape how others percieve us and to achieve our goals and ambitions.
Example: using more politeness strategies when wanting something.
Idiolect
The unique way of speaking and writing that belongs to an individual.
What does an idiolect include?
-Certain vocab or phrases that are commonly found in your professional field
-Adoption of colloquial language
-Use of specific expressions that are characteristic of a cultural or ethic community
