Jargon

Euphemism
Language that masks or mitigates a taboo or potentially offensive topic
Double speak
Language that purposely obfuscates the meaning or intent of a statement.
Rhetoric
Persuading a reader into action that supports the viewpoint of the writer
Non-discrimatory language
Language that focuses on creating inclusivity and equality by avoiding prejudice and stereotyping.
Use of phonological patterning in formal language
May show planning, consideration.
Use of morphological patterning in formal language
Addresses new ideas or inventions in society. can be jargon
Use of syntactic patterning in formal language
Provide clarity or emphasis to arguments.
Can be used for rhetorical effect.
Use of semantic patterning in formal language
Allows shared connections to be drawn to abstract concepts. Can craft a shared bias or manipulate an audience.
Purposes of formal language
Promoting social harmony, negotiating social taboos, building rapport;
reinforcing social distance and authority, establishing expertise;
clarifying, manipulating or obfuscating
Promoting social harmony
Involves the breaking down of barriers that might exist between various cultures and social groups.
Negotiating social taboo
Negotiating the discussion of taboos, using euphemism, figurative language, lexical choice and nominalisation.
Manipulating
Giving prominence to one aspect of a linguistic message to bias the audience.
Focusing on one message without paying attention to other viewpoints.
Obfuscating
Intentional use of language to make it more difficult for an audience to understand the meaning.
