Types of Waves Flashcards
what are the 2 types of wave
constructive and destructive
how are constructive waves formed
by weather systems that operate in the ocean and during calm weather conditions
how are destructive waves formed
by localised storm events and strong wind
constructive wave characteristics
low wave height, long wavelength and a low frequency (6-9 per minute),
strong swash and weak backwash, they deposit material and build up beaches
destructive wave characteristics
high wave height, short wavelength and a high frequency (11-16 per minute), weak swash and strong backwash, they erode coastlines and create wave-cut platforms and cliffs
when are the different waves more dominant
constructive are more dominant in summer
destructive are more dominant in winter
how is climate change affecting waves
it’s making destructive waves more common all year round
