Types of Erosion Flashcards
wave quarrying
when breaking waves hit rock faces with a pressure of 30 tonnes and pull rocks away from the cliff face
abrasion
when pebbles grind along a rock platform like sandpaper so over time the rock becomes smooth
attrition
when rocks that the sea is carrying knock against each other and break apart to become smaller and more rounded
solution
as the sea water is mildly acidic it dissolves certain types of rock such as limestone
hydraulic action
the force of water particularly in rivers or waves that erodes the banks or bed of a river or the cliffs of a coastline
corrosion
chemical erosion due to the waters acidity
mechanical weathering
an example is freeze thaw when water seeps into cracks in the rock and expands when it freezes which widens the cracks and will eventually break the rock is this process continues
chemical weathering
happens through chemical reactions such as oxidation, as minerals are exposed to the air they oxidise (rust) e.g. iron
biological weathering
when roots grow into the cliff and binds and burrows its roots
