Mass Movement Flashcards
what are the 7 main types of mass movement
mudflows
rockfall
landslides
slumps
run-off
solifluction
soil creep
what are mudflows
when increased water content in the soil reduces friction leading to mud flowing over underlying bed rock, this increases pore water pressure and affects water quality
what are rockfalls
when the cliff face is over 40 degrees and has been exposed to mechanical weathering resulting in scree forming
what is scree
scree is the build up of rock fragments at the base of the cliff as a result of mechanical weathering
what are landslides
when rainfall leads to water getting into joints and the bedding planes, reducing friction between them resulting in a landslide where a block of intact rock quickly moves down the cliff face
what are slumps
they’re curved, weak and unconsolidated areas of clay or sand. the build up of pore water pressure means it collapses under its own weight
what’s run-off
when heavy rainfall washes material from the surface of a cliff over the edge and down onto the shore
what’s solifluction
it’s the mass movement of soil that becomes waterlogged when water is trapped between the active layer and the frozen permafrost
what’s soil creep
the slowest and most continuous movement, particles move downhill from wetting and drying
