types of water pollutants Flashcards
There are six types of water pollutants, name them
HIM OSS Heavy metals Industrial wastes Microbial pollutants Organic matter and nutrients Sulfate particles Suspended particles
describe Heavy metals
heavy metals are from industrial processes, these heavy metals can accumulate in lakes and rivers. They are toxic to the marine life thus to the food chain, which mean the entire human and animal communities can be affected by this type of pollutant.
Describe industrial wastes
Industrial wastes contains toxic compounds such as Perssitent organic pollutants. They are toxic to the marine life and the food chain. Some toxins (hormones) affect the reproductive success of marine life and therefore disrupt the community structure of aquatic environment.
Microbial pollutants
Microbial pollutants are from wastewater, these microbial pollutants cause infectious diseases that infect the acquatic life and terrestrial life through drinking water. This increases the number of mortalities within an environment.
Organic matters and nutrients
Organic matter and nutrients cause the increase of the growth of the aerobic algae and acquatic plants which depletes oxygen. This is called eutrophicatoin and cause the suffocation of fish and acquatic organisms.
Sulfate particles
Sulfate particles can be caused by acid rain, which can change the PH of water making it more acidic, this damages the health of marine life and increase the number of mortalities within an environment.
Suspended particles
Suspended particles reduce the amount of sunlight penetrating the water, this can affect the photosynthetic plants and microorganisms . Which means other acquatic organisms will be affected because of their dependence on each other to survive.
