Types of sedimentation Flashcards
Name the five phases of settling
Discrete settling Flocculant settling hindered settling Transition Compaction settling
Describe discrete settling
In discrete settling we have low concentration of solids where particles settles as individual particles without any interaction with each other. Mainly grit and sands settle dicretely.
Describe Flocculant settling
Occurs when particles flocculate i.e particles build mass and settle as entities. Flocculant settling occurs at the in primary settling tank and in the upper portion of the secondary settling tank.
Describe Hindered settling
In hindered settling we have intermediate concentration of solids in which the interparticle forces hinder the settling settling of neighboring particles. It occurs in secondary settling tanks.
Describe compaction settling
In compaction settling we have high concentration of solids where it creates a surface and further settling occurs only by compaction. It occurs in the bottom of settling tanks and in sludge thickening facilities.
Describe transition settling
Transition settling occurs between hindered settling and compaction settling, in transition settling some particles are near each other and some particles are in contact.
Compare between Clay particles and Flocc particles
Clay particles have different sizes with same density whereas have both different sizes and different density
